The wine collection Laurie is referring to was the prototype set that
Tom Tjaarda and his business partner, David Hopps were preparing to
import from Italy to the US. Tom was a wine connoisseur and was friends
with a grower in the Piedmont area of Italy. Tom had three favorite
wines that were included in the set. Each type of wine had a separate
label designed by Tom and the set had two crystal wine glasses with his
signature etched into the glass and the word TORINO. The set also
contained a lithograph that Tom had drawn that showed various models of
cars he designed at the belt-line view. The artwork looked at first
blush like blades of wheat until you looked closer.
The set was to be boxed in a wood mini-crate with a personally signed
card from Tom. The number of sets that would have been available were
very limited and depended upon the very small output of wine from his
friend's vineyard.
Tom had spoken with his business partner on the Monday before his death
about the progress of the collection. There had been some set-backs with
the designs on the wine glasses and it was hoped that the one set would
be available for the Fun Rally along with some production sets as well.
As things go, Tom passed rapidly two days later and there was only one
set ever produced.
David Hopps overnighted the set to the Hyatt and I received it the
afternoon of the banquet. David Hopps wanted the entire proceeds from
the sale of the set to be donated to the Pantera Owner's Club of
America. It was felt by Joe Russo that an auction would work best for
presenting the collection.
I have never performed a live auction before, I have only watched the BJ
Auction, etc. on television. Once the auction began, I was quite
surprised how quickly the bids escalated from $275 to the final bid of
$1,600.00 that was made by Mr. Tom Kim, the owner of DeTomaso Automobil
Limited, who had spoken to the audience earlier that evening. Presently,
it is unclear if Mrs. Paola Tjaarda will go forward and enter production
or not with the wine collection. David Hopps will be visiting with Mrs.
Tjaarda in the near future and will let us know if the wine collection
will be available or the project will cease at just the one, prototype
set that was auctioned. At this moment, if no sets are ever made, I tend
to think that Mr. Tom Kim may have won a unique memento, a precious
memento designed by a unique individual. R.I.P., Tom Tjaarda

I did not write forward anything about an auction so I better do a computer scan
. I have a good virus program so I don't know what's going on.. but I didn't se
nd anything.
All I know is the mail from Ed of what was auctioned at Fun Rallye was the proto
type wine set of Tom Tjaarda.
