Smoke machines are the best way to find a leak, though being a static search
some findings get missed because of engine off.
WD 40 is fine but we found using it and the best ( Chemtool B 12 spray ) to
be dangerous if enough of the volatile spray causes a backfire. 

A backfire is always waiting for a fuel dose so it can scare you with sound
and flames.
Try using a thick spray oil, like Wurth or Zep HS 2000. 
The thick oil covers the vac leak which causes the vac induced rough idle or
? to go away until the thick oil gets sucked in and the flaw continues, also
no danger of flames. 
So you have found the leak and for three seconds saw/felt the engine run
better.
Plus as the oil is going in you will hear a very high pitch scream.

I used Chemtool on a concours Ghibli SS 17 yrs back in my home attached
wooded garage on a beautiful spring Sunday morning while the breakfast aroma
enticed me to stop playing with cars, to find an intake leak and then the
four two barrel Webers and engine top exploded up in fames. Hard to believe
such a beautiful car would have gone up in fames and may have taken my home
out with it.

Never again would I use a volatile spray to find a vacuum leak, unless I am
working on someone else's car on a empty concrete park lot!
