[DeTomaso] Longchamp spyder questions....

Roland had a Longchamp for sale very recently, it was a project car down to bare chassis, but looked like the bodywork and paint had all been done so it was simply a case of "some reassembly required"
I'm surprised he hasn't chimed in...

You have probably seen it, but Roland Jaeckel used his Longchamp to tow a Vallalunga to at least a couple of events

Björn,
Your " PS A Longchamp pulling a trailer with a Pantera race car would be nice view!" sounds like something I would dream of .......... I would just like to have my Ranchero and trailer set up to haul my Pantera.

Hi Patrick,
Converting to left hand is "doable". I can take some pictures of the
firewall since the engine is still out.
My GTS will soon ship for assembly. The company just worked on another
Longchamp and my instrument panel was used as a mold since it was
missing for them. That means another left hand instrument panel should
be easy to do. The owner has worked on many a Panteras too over the
years and has one himself.
There are many small changes to the 3000 serie compared to 2000. The
engine is moved further back, different heating/ventilation, ZF
steering rack, more modern interior, often an Aussie Cleveland etc. If
possible, I would aim for a 3000 car. The original 5-speed ZF is rare
but there are better alternatives if a manual is desired. Many parts
comes from Pantera (front suspension etc), others have been rather easy
to find from the general parts bin.
The authorities on Longchamp in Europe are Roland Jaeckel and Roger
Brottom.

A A I have interest in one of the less known DT models, the
Longchamp
A A Spyder GTS ( or GTSE ? ), type 2 ( VIN's 3000 and above ) .
A A I think that this car, as a convertible, deserves more
recognition than
A A it presently has, ( so do all the DT's in general ) and I know
that I
A A am not only one sharing this idea A :>))) . It is a spectacular
car in
A A cabrio ( I like the coupA(c) less , but I am obviously a cabrio
fan,
A A whatever the brand ) , it is spectacularly rare, A it should be
a very
A A fast 4 seater, ( just because of the engine that we all love )
and the
A A look is absolutely stunning, even ( and this is rare ) with the
top on
A A ! A . Two or three years ago, I had acquired a beautiful Aston
V8
A A cabrio from 1984, with a fantastic and beautifully designed
engine ( so
A A they say.... ) A and that was a terrible disappointment when i
drove
A A it. It was heavy, lacked power and torque, lacked precision in
the
A A driving, however all the suspension elements had been
professionnally
A A replaced... it felt like an overloaded boat carrying too many
anchors
A A .... I just hope the Longchamp does not feel the same on the
road, due
A A to its enormous weight . When I look at the announced weight,
and
A A knowing how Italians are romantically optimistic ( I am part of
them,
A A so to speak A ) I am afraid of the possible result ....A
A A I have gone over almost everything I could easily find on the
net over
A A this model, and also consulted my old original 1994 Bill Van
Ess
A A registry that I preciously keep in my library. I of course,
consulted
A A Chuck's precious registry, but still, there are some important
and
A A unanswered questions. BTW, I noticed that the Longchamp section
was not
A A as "clean" and "user friendly" as the Pantera section, and if
possible,
A A I will be gladly cooperating to improve it if possible, for our
A A community.
A A Well, the result I have gathered so far is quite uncomplete ,
and there
A A are some basic questions that remain unanswered.A
A A So, my dearest "think tank" , here I am...
A A 1. Were the Spyders ( type 1 and type 2 ) built AT or BY the
factory ,
A A or were they built - (i.e. converted ) AA at /by PAVESI in
Milano ?
A A Where there any conversions by other body shops ?A
A A 2. Does anyone know how many spyders with narrow fenders were
built ?
A A And with "wide body" A ?A
A A 3. Did they all come with 8 inch wheels in the front , and 10
at the
A A back ? Were the wheels the same as the Pantera ( how many slots
? )A
A A 4. How does it feel driving ? With the ZF ? With the 3 speed
automatic
A A gearbox ? How about the handling ? A drunken ship , or
"something
A A reasonably vague " due to the weight and the lack of chassis
rigidity
A A ?A
A A 5. Did they all originally come with LHD, and the RHD were
later
A A conversions , performed at the factory / at Pavesi ?A
A A 6. Has anyone experienced the conversion from RHD to LHD or
vice versa
A A ? Has it ever been done, like it sometimesA A happens on the
Pantera (
A A Mike Miller .... )
A A 7. I have been told by a present owner, that no less than 3
different
A A types of engines were used on the first models . True ?AA What
engines
A A ? Which one is the best ?
A A 8. Any suggestion to discreetly improve the handling if need
be, while
A A keeping the original look AA ?
A A 9. Does anyone have a copy of the service book ? The chassis,
brakes
A A A and suspensions are totally different from a Pantera. Where
can we
A A find original spares ? Where did A Alejandro buy some of the
components
A A ? ( from what other brand ? Alfa, Lancia, Peugeot ....???A
A A 10. How about the brake calipers and disks ?A
A A In the EU , prices presently vary from a mere 35.000 euros for
a wreck
A A ( a coupe) A in Germany, to 185.000 euros ( a concours GTS
cabrio ) in
A A Switzerland. What is , in your opinion, a fair price for a fair
cabrio
A A ( not concours, but in good driving condition ) How would you
rate the
A A purchase of a Longchamp as an investment for the years to come
A ?A
A A Any additional suggestion or remarks welcome A
A A Many many thanks to all, and Happy New Year from freezing
Brussels
