[DeTomaso] Techno question: setting the engine brace bar properly

Big Bore exhaust to header.

NAPA part number 31 381 about $9.00 ea.

Gasket has about a ¼” steel ring (inside of the “donut”) that extends out of one side of the donut. Works well.

                 After I thrashed around, I found a old guy (my age!) who was the owner-operator of an old school muffler shop.   I took my headers and he went in a back room and came out with exactly what I wanted, but about 1/16” too big.  I settled for slightly different exhaust donut.   He told me of a nearby parts store that had a lot of exhaust gaskets and I went over.  I bought a different pair of gaskets that looked like they would work. 

 

                 Back home I proceed to check the fitment with the headers and exhaust.  As I was rummaging around……what should I find, but the missing gaskets that have worked for fifteen years!   I had squirreled them away from myself.  Sigh.

 

                 I proceeded to check the internal diameters of the old gaskets and the new ones. The old ones were a little smaller than the exhaust I.D. but they fit better than the larger, newer gaskets that looked like a less optimal seal at the junction.  

 

                  So, I blew twenty dollars on two pairs of donut exhaust gaskets that don’t fit as well as my old ones.  The old ones are in place and the exhaust system is in place on the engine and in the Pantera.  A happy ending in my book until I fire up the engine and start the debugging process…….but it is *always something*.

I assume that setting the upper shock bracket centers for 800mm +/- 2mm is taking things to serious?

Chuck,

You're close. Jack the car so the rear wheels are off the ground. Install bar and extend it so it is snug, pressing outward on both sides. Tighten everything down then lower the car....
