[DeTomaso] Some FIA Group 3 brake questions - circa 1973

Hi Steve,
The extra headers were some old four-into-one style from Hall Pantera
as I recall. The plan (way back when) was to blast them, re-weld as
necessary and ceramic coat. I never got around to doing that. If you
are buying the entire GTS system from Wilkinson, get the whole thing,
headers, mufflers, pipes, all of it. It's a killer of a deal package
purchased by many on this list when it first came out. It really helps
open up the exhaust, looks good and sounds good. It was on my list of
things to buy when I won the lottery. :)
You paid a fair price for the car... the extended family just happens
to come with it. You'll find folks on the DeTomaso email forum span
the spectrum. We have folks who are pretty much car show nuts only and
they have some of the prettiest Panteras you'll ever see. On the other
end of the spectrum, we have those who simply make sure everything
works, the car is clean and it goes really fast, in various kinds of
competition events. In between the two, many owners find joy in a
little bit of both. Overall, if you have a question, there is most
likely someone here who can answer it.
Sam is only 13 this year so it may be hard to allow him to ride along.
Still, if we are free on a race weekend and we can make it down, we may
try. It would be pretty cool to watch the car in action.
I'll see about hooking you up on the Team Pantera Racing web site too.
Give me a day or so.

Asa Jay,
I would love to get set up with Team Pantera too. Can you help me get
set up? It seems everyone has an interest in your car!
Truly, after 28 years of racing, I have never seen such a "open" group
willing to share. After the last few days, I have become greatly
relieved to know that I don't have to reinvent anything -- it is here
somewhere on one of the Pantera Forums, and if not, just ask. I am so
used to rediscovering secrets -- what a unique group this! Had I know
this before hand, I would have paid more for the car. :)
If you and your son can make the next event, you are welcome to grab a
helmet and run the Time Trial group with your son. I am hoping the car
will surprise you. We are looking at either the June or August SCCA
event at PIR, depending on how our list of projects progresses.
One more question - I am about to pull the trigger on the GTS headers
and mufflers. I noticed an aftermarket header in the stack of spares
that came with the car. Any idea what it is?

Steven G. Lisa, Esq.

Yes, its permissible to share a link. And the Team Pantera Racing web
site also has a gallery. It might be cool to post some photos there
too. I'd need to set you up with an account.

I am working on getting some photo's - believe it or not we were busy
enough that we didn't take any of our own!!! But, among the constant parade
of people gawking, there were a few photographers that stopped by and said
they snapped photo's during practice and qualifying. I am waiting on
getting some emails.
Again, I am new to this process, but I have a dropbox folder that I am
keeping of the build, beginning after Asa Jay dropped 5533 off in Portland
last year. I am not anxious to make it uber-public, but I would happily
share it with the forum. Is that allowed?

[18]detomaso at server.detomasolist.com Subject: [DeTomaso] Some FIA
Group 3 brake questions - circa 1973 This is my first post, so I
hope I get it right. Let me know if I broke etiquette. So, we
confirmed this weekend running in the Oregon SCCA Vintage group at
PIR, that the original Pantera brakes are indeed lacking. Aside from
brake issues, Asa Jay's old car ran well. The issue is that I am
required to run the stock front and rear calipers if I want the car
to be "dated" under the FIA Group 3 rules as of "1973." As best I
can tell (and maybe I am wrong), the "big" calipers were not
approved in Group 3 until 1974. However, it also appears, as best I
can tell, that the 1973 FIA Group 3 rules allowed vented front and
rear rotors in place of the original non-vented rotors.
Unfortunately, slotted rotors are not allowed. I happily just bought
two sets of Mike Drew's recently sourced vented/slotted rotors,
which I will run on the front for now. Except for snooty events,
there will be no issues doing so. But, I have a few questions for
the experts here about some longer term concerns: 1. I eventually
need to find vented but non-slotted front and rear rotors for the
Pantera, as close as possible to what was run in the FIA Group 3 in
1973. Any ideas on where to find vented front and rear rotors that
are equivalent to the 1973 FIA Group s rotors? 2. I would like
something improved in place of the stock rear rotors while I am
sourcing the proper vented rotors circa 1973. Any ideas? 3. What are
the best race front and rear pads to run in the original calipers,
and where do we get them? I am guessing Porterfield? Also, I want to
again thank all those that tried to help us out last weekend when
the Booster failed. Regards, S teve Lisa SN 5533 Steve Lisa SN 5533
