[DeTomaso] Oil Leak Fixed. What Torque?

In the clock world it is not uncommon to see "shouldered screws" for the
same reason.

Calculating torque to provide desired gasket compression was something I
occasionally needed to do in a past life. However these were large flanges
with special gaskets. Interesting finding was the torque required to
provide the optimum gasket compression would not provide the bolting force
needed to prevent vibrating loose (or the pieces not being able to provide
structural support). If the gasket was critical, a compression stop was
added so that the bolt could be torque to their limit without crushing the
gasket

And our "mechanics feel" saying was to torque to the GE procedure (Good
Enough)

Sorry for the ramblings, just reminiscing
Joe

<< I just tighten so it feels tight without over tightening>>

When I asked a similar question in class the teacher told me use "MF"!

"Mechanic's Feel"....as I was told later.

Terry -
I can't answer your specific question as to proper torque, but I can offer
some practical experience.

I remove the valve covers every year as I have solid lifters and I
check/adjust the lash once a year. I just tighten so it feels tight without
overtightening - which I realize is neither a Metric nor Standard unit of
measure - and I don't have leaks. I have blue Fel-pro valve covers, which
allow a certain amount of compression. I just tighten it down fairly snug,
by hand, without overtightening and I have never had problems.
