Dear Michael,
I have two Panteras. One has an engine with dyno tested
450 hp and it uses an aluminum Fidenza flywheel. The other Pantera has
a 385 hp engine and a stock flywheel. I detect the smallest amount of
increased sensitivity with the aluminum flywheel Pantera when starting
from a stop. I do not detect that with the heavier flywheel in the
other Pantera. Otherwise, I don't find any big advantage with an
aluminum flywheel over stock. My most recent engine build uses an
aftermarket steel or iron flywheel, which is about 2/3rds of the weight
of the stock iron flywheel and about halfway in between the weights of
the stock and aluminum units. It seems to be an excellent compromise in
reduced weight, cost and compatibility with the other hardware bits at
the clutch-flywheel interface.
Finally, with a tricked out Cleveland stroker that has
plenty of torque, you would be perfectly fine with the stock flywheel or
the reduced weight aftermarket iron flywheel. Aluminum flywheels have
some bragging rights, higher expense and tiny practical benefits for
typical street/highway/occasional track use.
Warmest regards, Chuck Engles
