Julian,


The IMSA Pantera was built over a period of at least two years, '84 - '86. Originally the plan was to use the same tube frame as on Dennis' car - which I understand was built out of a firm in Az using quite advance CAD capabilities (for that time). 


However, when the team received and evaluated the frame, they determined it was inadequate for their purposes. So while the main-hoop and a few of the other tubes may have been retained, the rest of the chassis was completely redesigned based on the IMSA regulations at that time. 


This is not to say, there are any problems with the frame on Dennis' car - absolutely not! It's just that the two cars were originally built with different constraints and objectives.


BTW Les Gray did write an interesting account several years ago in the POCA magazine, about how the car that Dennis now owns came very close to entering professional competition with IMSA. As I recall, that effort even gathered some level of factory support. I think that was around 1990. Maybe Les will chime in with some details on that story!

Thank you for the suggestions.

Not a "silly question", but yes, I did contact Jongbloed ... a couple of years ago. They do not build these wheels or parts any longer.


It may be worth circling around with them again to see if the situation has changed. But with the definition of "insanity" being what it is, I thought I'd try a different route to locate the wheel parts.


I do have some Diamond Racing wheels, which are similar to the Bassets, and I agree, both are good inexpensive options for track use.


I know the Jongbloed's are a bit obscure, but that's partially what I like about them. And they are period-correct having been run on actual race cars "back in the day".


Yes, the BBS's are certainly more readily available. I use those on my '86 IMSA Pantera ... which is coming along nicely. Engine, gearbox, brakes and other big-pieces are done ... but it's all the little stuff that's taking big amounts of time! Thank you for asking.


And just to clarify, the IMSA Pantera has no connection to Long & Newman. You're probably thinking there's a connection because, I believe, Dennis Quella's tube-frame racer uses a body from L&N. But my car is completely different.

Maybe a silly question , but have you contacted Jongbloed, they still offer most of the range of racing wheels.


I have seen the Basset wheels on a few wide body Pantera vintage racers , a very cheap option and look similar to the GT5 Campi's.

The older BBS race rims seem more available than Jongbloed.

It's great to see you get back to this car, do you have the Long & Newman tube frame car up and running?
