[DeTomaso] California Cache'

A while back I was sent fresh photos by a new registry user, who was asking for some history on a car for sale.

He was happy to see the car wearing California plates, and asked if the age of the plate could be determined.

He included the VIN (with a photo) and we were reviewing the registry history together simultaneously.

As it turns out, while the California license plate was from the appropriate vintage (1971-1975), the car

was NOT from California as the seller implied.

The registry history included details and ownership history from *new*, and the car had spent its first years (20+)

elsewhere! And there is no way the car could have legitimately received this plate.

So the seller had just affixed a vintage-correct California plate. One can only presume that the seller felt it added

value to a car to appear to have been from California from new.

I have seen this technique before, so it does occur and buyers should be aware that not all cars wearing California

plates are actually from California.

Caveat Emptor!
