[DeTomaso] Headlights - Stock replacement options?

But gotta wonder just how much better is a $400+ LED headlight vs. a
$50 LED
headlight ?

Good question. Quite a bit better, actually. I'm not an expert, but
I do some property management and over the years I've seen how LED
lighting has improved. The cheaper ones tend to have many of the tiny
LED's daisy-chained together. These are nice and bright but haven't
really stood up to commercial use over time. One by one the little
suckers burn out. Recently LED tech has advanced and now there
are larger singular LED's that look more like a microchip than any
conventional LED bulb array. I just put one over my garage door and
it is super bright and draws next to nothing in power compared to the
incandescent floods. I'd imagine that the more expensive LED
headlights use these new "microchip" type emitters that work so well.
As to their longevity, I cannot say. Time will tell.

An odd thing to say, given LED's are the big thing in home power
consumption
reduction ... they don't generate the waste heat of an incandescent.
I'm guessing inefficient power regulation in the cheaper LED
headlights is
why they take more power than the pricey ones.
But gotta wonder just how much better is a $400+ LED headlight vs. a
$50 LED
headlight ? $700 buys a lot of replacement generators.
Thanks,

I wouldn't expect power draw to drop much for a given amount of light.
Efficiency is what it is for a LED.

For a different application I've been looking at LED headlamps on eBay
etc.
Want to run six at once without killing the generator.

round sealed beam lights that used to be ubiquitous. For some reason
Jeeps
are always the target market, Vortex also only mentions the Jeep
application
by name:

At the ~$50 price point, many different sellers on eBay appear to be
selling
the same offshore units, some have many LED's within the seven inch
circle,
others have 3-4 larger LED's. Halos/angel eyes, DRL's & amber built in
turn
signals are common variations.
But often the power consumption on these is greater than the old
sealed
beams ... there appear to be heat sinks on the back and I wonder what
the
air circulation would be once installed in the typical bucket. This
power
consumption does not support my genius plan obviously.
OTOH these visionx units at $419 ea. do appear to waste less power,
consuming only 40 watts per the website.
Expect I'll wait for the price, and power consumption, to fall.

Will do Scott, later once its dark, we are having our Panteras

Aloha Bill - any chance you have pictures you could share of the
lights
in action? I've installed Sylvania SilverStars all my vehicles, but
I'm
lucky if the bulbs last more than a year (I don't think they take
too
kindly to a lot of vibration). The Vortex LEDs sound like the
optimum
  replacement.
