1951 Plymouth was left hand thread on right hand side of car and studs had a L on the end that would show at the center of lug nut...... My first car and a friend saved me from twisting off a lug nut. Bud #3400 ( Drive it like there is no tomorrow -- for there may not be ! )

If memory servers me correct most 60's Chryslers used left handed threads on
the right side of the car. Wile Ford and GM used normal right hand threads
on both sides of the car. I do not remember a tendency for wheels to fall of
any one side of any make of car.

Okay...really dumb question here. Wouldn't hard braking want to loosen the
axle nut??

 Doug,

Remember the axle nut is on the inside of the
wheel in this case, if it were RH then the counter clockwise
motion of the axle would want to undo it!

 I would think that
the "righty tighty" threads (normal) go on the
 left side
of the vehicle. Think of the nut
being stationary while the axle (on the
 drivers side)  rotates counter clockwise
 (looking from outside the car),
 meaning the
nut wants to self tighten (rotate clockwise), which is
 the
 desired situation. Of course,
 there's a 50/50 chance that I'm completely
 full of "it"!

 Hi guys,

I thought I would lead off
with he first technical question on the new
 forum.

 The
rear axles are marked S and D, for 'left' and
 'right' respectively. But
 that
speaks to the thread direction (one of them is reverse
 thread, left to
 tighten)

It's my belief that the S or left-tighten
axle goes on the left side of the
 car but I
can't remember for sure. Can somebody confirm or
 deny?

 Thanks!

 And welcome back!

 Mike
