Oh forgot...
Be sure the swirl cap was down and working proper.  Over filling the
recovery tank can cause a coolant spill to establish level

I agree with other's post...don't cut the hood.  
Get the air out and consider a continuous venting configuration. (the TSB
recommendation, radiator top vent back to swirl tank, was not a very good
option).  And of course a new, PROPER thermosatat.

As for the gauge indication, was the new sender compatible with the gauge.
Is the location on the engine front the exiting coolant (hottest) or the
inlet (cooler).  Reading 230F all the time could be the sender failed or you
have a ground in the sensing wire (low resistance higher gauge reading)

..I only had this slight boiling over in the swirl tank once also i fitted a
new temp sender on the engine front  and it read about 160 degrees  until
now its reading 230 degress all the time with only veery small vasriation in
reading  even when engine is cold any quick ideas on why it would suddenly
go wrong ?
