Terry,
Is there a web site out there with tools for this? What would make it valuab
le would be if it is searchable. For example, being able to search for cooling
system mods, brake mods, exhaust systems, suspension mod., etc.
After all the copyright drama here recently, people may be gun shy regarding
creating a web site where others can post content. Ideally, it would not requi
re monitoring, but I don't think a disclaimer regarding posts of third party con
tent removes liability for copyright infringement. I do however think it would
be a rare occurrence for a third party to raise an infringement issue, for examp
le, someone posting a third party's copyrighted photo. When a claim like that i
s made, usually all the site owner has to do is take down the infringing materia
l.

Thanks for the info. I ordered the aluminum faced insulation.

First, I am a Spacecraft, Computer Science, Aerospace guy. They
keep
me far away from the hardware if they can. ;-)
Most people today are involved in the Juno JOI happening this
weekend.
This was what I could glean from the NASA
websites.
This piece (I have for show when I talk) is Kapton with 20 layers
of
dacron netting between silver Kapton-fiberglass fabric layers.
This cuts down on heat transfer between layers. Since this is
only for
show, mine is not gold, but most are.
The amount of gold used on an entire spacecraft can be measured
in
ounces. Gold is a uniquely workable metal and the foil
is used primarily as radiation shield. It's more about
reflection and
you only need a very thin amount. Once you leave the
protective cocoon of the earths magnetosphere (1m miles out), the
radiation is extreme. Plus gold does not corrode.
It requires less care and maintenance to keep mission-ready than
it's
cheaper competitors, silver, copper or aluminum.
Astronauts visors are polycarbonate plastic coated with a thin
layer of
gold. Both IR and visible light can enter our eye's retina
equally well but our eyes have visible receptors but not IR ones.
If
you encounter intense visible light those receptors will warn you
to turn away. But with intense IR you would not realize your
eyes are
being burned. Do you still want to go to Mars? Hmmm?

I will look into it. I have a piece of shielding in my office.
It has
20 layers.
But right now I am crushed building the departure sequences for
Dawn.
Plus we have Juno JOI
this weekend. Crazy stuff happening all weekend.

I recall reading a blurb from NASA (ya I read that stuff too)that
the
gold
color faced insulation was much better then the aluminum color
faced
insulation. You do see it in all the photos of the space craft.
Let's see if Terry knows about this.

I second that the cloth and aluminium foils are top rate.

This is a list of stuff a lot or racers use to protect their
bodywork.
Some of it is pretty expensive, but so is paint...

After a short trip yesterday I noticed one of my turbos was
leaking
oil. A small amount on the input (pressure) side. A quick
tightening
and it was fine. I did notice a small paint bubble on the deck
directly
above the turbo. There is about 2 inches clearance about the
turbos
but
the deck was really hot to the touch.
Question. I am looking for a product that can be applied (as a
sheet
or
thin blanket) to the underside of the deck above the turbo. I
have
some
chromed sheet metal shields that I may be able to fit to the
turbos but
would like the real protection of an insulator.
Thanks in advance to the "collective",
