The raised lid engine cover was a 1973 addition, all the 71 and pre L 72
cars came with just the curved engine screen. Then as the engines were
being replace from Hydraulicing from rain water filling them through the
Air cleaner center hole, the TSB came out to put a piece of Sheet metal
over the center of the Engine screen to keep the rain water out, and the L
cars came with a strip of Black sheet metal to do the same from the
factory. That was then the essence of the series 3 engine cover with the
raised center to help clearance the new smog riser under the carburetor in
73 and 74 models.
