Mike, as far as test drives go I had a similar experience when I bought my car. They would not let me drive the car until we had essentially come to agreement on a price pending my satisfaction with the test drive. Given it was a low mileage car they said they did not want to put miles on it with people that were not serious. 

They let me crawl in, under, and around the car is much as I wanted and I did as much research as I could.

Fortunately, the rather long test drive went flawlessly and I ended up buying the car. I guess I got lucky.
