[DeTomaso] Power steering

Hi Ed,

The setup from Jegs is not really ready for prime time yet even though they
have it for sale. The problem is the fitment isn't quite right yet. Jegs
doesn't know this because they simply drop ship it from the manufacturer to
the end user. This is why buying Pantera specific items from a company like
Jegs or Summit is a bad idea unless you don't mind having to "make it work".

SACC Restorations has teamed up with the manufacturer to rework the issues
we uncovered with the current design and then reintroduce the product
through SACC Restorations (it will likely still be available through Jegs as
well). I currently have a unit installed in my Pantera. It is an AWESOME
unit and really transforms the driving experience. Really makes the car feel
more modern and enjoyable than the manual steering.

The main difference between the $2500 unit being sold overseas and the EPAS
(Jegs) unit is how the assist level is controlled and price. The $2500 unit
has speed sensitive boost control where the EPAS (Jegs) unit is controlled
via a knob. Installation is less complicated on the EPAS unit because you do
not have to tap into the speedo cable for the speed sensor. You simply
install a knob. You control the amount of boost via a knob setting rather
than letting the unit decide how much boost it thinks you need.

I have had the unit installed in my Pantera for months and love it. I even
tried it out at the race track to see how it performed under performance
driving conditions. I was surprised to find that I like it just as much with
the boost setting quite high during high speed driving. The beauty of this
system is you can dial it down, if you like, to almost nothing. Very user
friendly.

SACC Restorations is currently working with the manufacturer to solve the
couple of installation issues we uncovered so the unit will be extremely
easy to install. Installation between the 2 styles of Electric Power
Steering Systems currently available is almost identical as both units are
very close to each other is design. Again, the main difference is how boost
is controlled and price.

More to come soon...

Hi Paul,

Thanks for this link !!
After watching the video, I like the simplicity and price of this EPAS setup
from Jegs. Has anyone actually installed this setup in a Pantera? If so,
how satisfied were you with the performance, and the ease of the
installation ?

Thanks,

Ed L

So the other night I was watching an episode of wheeler dealer on the
discovery channel. They were fixing up a Honda 2000s that had a variety of
issues. One of them was the power rack and pinion was failing. Interestingly
the rack and pinion unit electric assist was part of the worm gear rather
than having a separate hydraulic pump or electric hydraulic pump. I don't
know if any one has looked into retrofitting a unit like this on a Pcar or
not but I thought this would be a super slick set up for upgrading to a
power assist steering set up while still maintaining a very good steering
feel. I have drive a Honda 2000s a couple of years ago and I remember it
having very good steering feel and feedback. Or not . Cheers and happy
holidays my brothers. Paul
