[DeTomaso] Why would an engine idle faster after valve adjustment?

Just passing on what I have heard...
Increased valve lash reduces overlap thus at idle reduces the exhaust that "burbs" into the intake. This should increase low end torque with loss at higher rpms.

....
How can adjusting the valves make a car idle so much faster, and can too much lash cause a problem other than loss of power?
Thanks,
