Lots of different cars used folding spares- Buick& other GMs, Ford, Porsche etc- the 911 spare was a 16". Maybe you didn't get a Pantera spare. It was supposed to be on a 14"x 6" steel Ford passenger car wheel.

You are correct about the tubs, I have a total of three, one super
   early
version, a middle version with the inset and without any hold
   down provision
and the late version with the threaded receiver for a
   tire hold down.
   I
came across an original spare tire after 10 years of seeking one out
   and was
perplexed that or did not fit into the recess, I had always
   thought it went
inside, not that it rested on top.
Now I want to know why, it seems an odd
design choice.
