Chuck,

If you are into it this deep you may as well pull the distriditor and see
how things look. It is connected from the top of the motor to the oil pump
on the bottom. That is a good path for sound to travel.

I second Will's doubt of the balancer and suggestion that you check the 
carb gasket or other possible vacuum leak.
