[DeTomaso] Ignition switch

Besides what Roland and Julian said, DeTomaso is known to have used FIVE different ignition switches over the years and some will need wiring changes to work in certain Panteras. I've also seen the mechanical lock-lug that enters the steering shaft get gummed up, causing sticking problems. The internal spring often breaks and its possible for a broken end to get caught between the locking-lug and shaft.

To remove the mechanical portion of a switch, see Steve Liebenow's recent POCA Newsletter article on drilling a release hole in the switch body so it can be removed from the car.

Thinking, these switches are easy to find is a totally mistake ! These
   are
rarer than hens teeth. The central parts storage of Ford Europe was
   destoyed
in a big fire in the eighties. Ford never made a new
   production of those
switches. After years now, all the common sources
   dried out on these. Last
new switch, i saw this summer on ebay UK went
for roughly 450 pounds ! This
switch was NOT avertised as a DeTomaso or
TVR part, it was just avertised as
a normal Ford Capri part. I was
lucky enough, to locate a former DeTomaso
dealer in Germany, who stored
a ton of parts in his basement for more than
20 years. There, i found
quite rare parts, like a few of those switches new
and used as well as
other rare parts, like NOS early dashboard vents with
surrounds and
other long time not seen parts.

   The Pantera ignition switch is
lifted directly from period European
   Fords (Escort, '71-'73 Capri etc.)
which are comparatively rare in the

antipodes.
There should be plenty of sources of parts for those cars
there,
including the ignition switch. They cost a fortune from Pantera

sources....
