[DeTomaso] Alden Shock Repair

Definitely not a sales pitch, but.....

I've had Alden shocks on 3583 for 14 years and over 30k miles, including a huge number of extremely brutal track laps (easily in the thousands of laps). Over that time the Alden's have performed flawlessly, and done a spectacular job of keeping the suspension under control at all times and also balanced and neutral at the limit. As some of you have witnessed, I do not baby the Pantera at the track. It takes a serious pounding. No oil leaks, no issues - at least from the shocks. The shocks are probably the only piece on the car that I have not had to rebuild multiple times. The Aldens provide a firm but perfectly tolerable street ride as well.

Perhaps these Aldens are the anomaly, but I've been nothing but happy with them. These 14 year old shocks are now getting to the point of needing a nitrogen recharge (I noticed that at TWS last weekend), which I will likely have done in the next month or so. I expect them to last another decade. Even if they don't, I've certainly gotten my money's worth out of them.

How to rebuild Alden shocks:
1- Remove shocks from car
2 - Throw them as far as you can or use for boat anchor on a boat you don't care about
3 - Bite the bullet and buy new Konis
4 - Smile

Alden will rebuild them for you at a cost, but they will only last another 2000 miles. These shocks were never meant for the kind of hard driving many Pantera owners do, and as I recall hearing, were mostly meant for hot rods.

Good luck, your results may vary.

Folks,
Noticed oil leaking from front Alden coil over aluminum shock. Purchased 3/2005. Although likely only 2000 miles on car since then, they leak!!! Anyone know of a rebuild kit or if rebuilding a shock by yourself is doable? Alden is in CA, and it would cost more to ship and pay rebuild charge than buy a new Shock likely!!!
Also any hints in front shock removal?
Thanks!!!!
