I highly doubt the spline stripped. More likely is the CV joint failed. Once the cage breaks the CV joint no longer can transmit
power...

Julian,

It broke internally. The bit that is bolted to the flange spins one way while the shaft connected to the other CV spins the other
way. I suspect the splines were stripped. 

As to why that happened? That is for others, wiser than me to ascertain....
