[DeTomaso] Dinner with Sigbjorn/Fan switching

Having the fans on all the time will certainly promote premature fan failure.

Why not have them come on when they're needed, then go off when not?

Plus, I'm certainly not an expert but I believe running fans at freeway speed might 'impair' air flow through the radiator.

</div>When PI Motorsports fixed some things on my car a while back I noticed
the fans came on right when I turned on the ignition. "Hey Gary,
these fans used to come on with a temp sensor, did you....?" "Yes."
I looked at him quizzically and he just smiled and shook his head.
No further explanation necessary.

So how many cars in that era had manual fans? How many people forgot
to switch them on? I'm showing my age, but it's stuff we grew up with
like manual choke, headlight dip switch on the floor, windshield
washers you actually pumped. You didn't forget as it was part of your
everyday driving routine.

Absolutely! How many stories have you heard where people forget to
switch on their fans? Again, as silly as needing to switch on the oil
pump....and almost as costly. Both of my fans operate by thermal
switch....just like modern day cars.

Marshall,
You have a '71 pushbutton which (stock) has one of the two radiator
fans controlled only by a switch. Have you changed to the later
all-automatic operation?

Sounds like you guys had quite the adventure! Have a safe trip home!!
