All,
There were basically two styles of fuel level sender. The early cars used
a dedicated fuel pickup pipe, so the sender was just that--a sender. It
had provisions for only two wires (one for the needle, one for the idiot
light), and a small tab was added to one of the mounting bolts to serve as a
ground wire mount.
The later cars had the fuel pickup pipe incorporated into the sender, and
the sender had provisions for all three wires.
Several years ago, when supplies of old-stock senders ran out, Wilkinson
tooled up and had them reproduced. The thing is, in order to get them made
he had to commit to buying 1000 (!!!!!) of them. I was in his shop when
they had just arrived--pallets and pallets of them. He blew them out at a
promotional discount price, but that sale is long gone.
All the vendors now carry them, and you'll have to hunt around for the best
deal if that concerns you. Chances are they are all priced pretty
closely?
