Doug ,
I beg to differ. Immediately following 9/11 there was a surge of
enlistments in all branches of the military. The economy was strong and I'm
sure many of these people could have found other lines of work that didn't
put them in harms way.
As an aside 20 years is a microcosm  in history. I was referring to the
bigger picture when people joined up to save the world and the US from the
greatest threat to our freedom we have known to date. Those who forget
history are doomed to relive it.
