Dear Dennis,
I don't know that much about AC either. I suspect that the most
you'd need for a completely dry system would be 4 or 5 "pounds" plus some
compressor oil. I may well be corrected, however. I would suggest buying
the six cans of the smaller quantity and the two cans of the pound size.
That may completely take care of things, with a bit left over for the
future.

So I looked on my local CL and found someone with the following for sale:
6 cans R-12 oil charge (2oz. Oil + 2oz R-12) $10/ea
2 cans pure R-12 refrigerant (14 oz, no dye) $20/ea
1 can R-12 leak detector. $10
How much does our car need? The "oil charge" or just the "pure"
