Could a drain cock w/nipple be used as the vent? Thus more environmentally
friendly and cleaner (using a hose to catch can when venting)

Oddly I never saw your original post but did see Chuck's response.
Bleed screws are readily available at any auto parts store. I just bought
one a few days ago at O'Reillys.
While you're at it, replace the drain plug with this:
