[DeTomaso] GT40/Pantera

Thank you very nuch, Chuck.
It is certainly true that I don't have a year's worth of cars lined
up to be featured in Profiles (I actually have 1.5 right now). Chuck hit the
nail on the head - I have deadlines and I really don't want to disappoint
the membership with a late or nonexistent magazine. I also have a full-time
job and a wife (I think I have a life, too).
Tony's car certainly started out as an average Pantera and it is
still no less a Pantera than any other modified one (just look at featured
cars in past issues). How many wings and flares does a Pantera need? As many
as its owner decides it needs.
A thoughtful discussion usually ends up with positive results - how
about submitting the story of you and your car?

Dear Mikael,

Your point is well taken. Another consideration is that of the
realities of turning out a Quarterly Profiles account for what you see.

I was the editor of the Dallas Pantera Club newsletter. I
completely understand the pressure to make the deadline and the paucity of
contributions from members. In the case of the new editor, I suspect that
rather than promoting Mr. Ortiz's custom Pantera philosophy, Mr. Haney was
happy to have the written and photographic material to present a Pantera of
the Quarter. I don't know, but I suspect that he does not have a folder of
Panteras of the Quarter to fill the next five issues and I suspect that he
would gladly entertain your Pantera (as a philosophical balance to the Black
Pantera) or anyone else who is able to cooperate with the general
requirements of the Quarterly.

                    Warmest regards, Chuck Engles

If you guys haven't received your copy of Profiles yet, maybe look in your
dustbin again. The envelope with what you thought was a GT40 magazine sent
to you by mistake was in fact the Profiles, with the black Pantera with GT40
front and rear etc. that Profiles had the IMO poor taste to put on the cover
and rear and centerfold.

I of course quickly turned to the build-text, because I wanted to try to
understand WHY? Was there a Pantera with smashed front and rear and a GT40
parked on railway tracks so only front and rear was saved? No, the author
states "for some crazy reason". Indeed.

I saw this car at POCA in Arizona a few years ago, where it was parked in
the "look-at-me" spot right in front of the doors, so you had to walk around
it. After refusing the first couple of times, I did take the time to look it
over. And the craftsmanship was excellent including mirror like pint.
Sometimes when you see "menacingly modified" (quote from Profiles) cars like
this, but well done, you can state "I don't like it, but I'm impressed with
the craftsmanship". Well not here, not this one. Even though the
craftsmanship is good, you do not build your car to look like another brand.
As simple as that.

I hope the skillful builder gets the GT40 he really wants and leaves our
Panteras alone. And I hope Profiles editor has better judgment going
forward. In the same envelope was the Membership Renewal Notice. Brave!
Whether I renew or not depends on the reaction to this mail. Am I alone
here?

Mikael
