[DeTomaso] BMW M1 minuscule Pcar content

In 78 or so I can remember drooling over some BMW's at a dealer in Olympia,
WA. I struck up a conversation with the sales manager, and somehow it came
around to his telling me about a mid-engine car that BMW was about to come
out with. He then gave me a copy of a brochure for the M1, which I had for
many years. I think I may still have it hidden away somewhere. All I
remember is how radical it looked for the time. It also had a number of
photos and drawings of the concept car from which the M1 was designed. Wish
I could find it . . . .

I was having my cars' oil change today and in the show room was an orange
79 M1. It has been at least 15 years since I have seen one in person. The
last time I saw one, actually three, was at the BMW corral when the Italian
Concorso was being held at the Quail. It was the owners personal car and I
being a car guy and knowledgable about the car, it's wheel manufacture and
production one of service guys opened up the doors so I could look inside,
at the engine and talk with him for awhile. What a beautiful car and the
level of detail, fitment and condition was amazing for a car built in 1979.
Here is the thing, it is also interesting just how many similar styling cues
the car has in common with the Pantera (Pcar content) and cues that were
taken from the Muira and cues that would be used in future Lamborghinis and
although the cockpit has the same amount of interior space it is much more
roomy and comfortable than the interior of a Pantera. Asked how big of check
would it take to drive it home, the service guy said the owner still loves
driving it from time to time as noted by the recently installed tires and he
would not sell it while still alive.

Cheers Paul
