>>>"Will not find 2nd gear". What does that mean exactly? Is it
crunching when you attempt to shift quickly into 2nd gear? If so, that's not a
linkage problem, that's a completely typical indication of 2nd gear synchro
wear, the principal thing that drives people to have their gearboxes
overhauled.
Or are you suggesting that the shift lever goes fully into the 2nd gear
slot but the gearbox doesn't engage and stays in neutral? Or that the gear
initially seems to engage but then it pops out? That's possibly a linkage
adjustement. All other things being equal, all you have to do is adjust the
turnbuckle so that the shift lever is slightly further to the rear when the
car is in neutral.
But if the shift lever isn't hitting the forward end of the gate already,
moving the lever back won't help anything. It's gearbox overhaul time.
Fortunately Lloyd Butfoy doesn't have much of a backlog now and can turn
gearboxes around in only 3-4 weeks. Both Larry Finch and my wife have
gearboxes in his hands and they will be coming home next week, after having been
dropped off mid-January....
