Tom,
It's horrendously expensive, because it's normally only done at the same
time that the gearbox is being rebuilt. As far as I know, those who
specialize in such things will not consider polishing a complete gearbox, although I
don't know the specific reason for this.
Instead, while you're getting your $5000 gearbox overhaul, if you want to
spend an extra $1500 or so, they will arrange to have the bare cases
polished. It's something that is normally subcontracted out; the pieces are either
given to a polishing company, or the shop hires a temporary worker who does
it on-site. It's a very time-consuming thing, taking many, many hours to
do properly.
I don't know of anybody doing ZF work in the northeast; Guy Trigaux in
Simpsonville, SC is the nearest ZF expert to you, I think. He's not much for
unnecessary bling, and he may not offer polishing service.
In short, if your gearbox was falling apart and needed to be rebuilt,
polishing is something you might consider while you're at it, but I would never
advocate taking apart a good gearbox just to shine it up. It takes a LOT of
maintenance to keep it looking decent; if you are going to drive your car
at all (especially in the northeast where the climate is often far from
ideal), I'd urge you to just leave it alone.
Lloyd Butfoy advocates cleaning the case, then spraying it with WD-40 which
both makes it look good, and is easy to clean when it gets dirty.
