[DeTomaso] serious question re "another idiot"

Am I wrong in thinking this is just an example of power oversteer? The car is slewing sideways because the rear tires have broken loose and developed a slip angle.
The cure is to simply take your foot off the gas, no? The car might then be pointed in the wrong direction, but this you could remedy by just steering around whatever object you were pointed at, no? Or do the "both feet out" thing and just slam the brakes. You might go sideways but at least you won't crash into anything.
I have seen several instances of this where the driver seems to freeze and leaves his foot down while the car powers into something.
