POCA is turning back the clock and returning the Fun Rally to the Plaza
Hotel in downtown Las Vegas for 2016.
We have signed a contract with the hotel to host our 35th Annual Fun Rally
at the Plaza Hotel and Casino for the period of Wednesday May 11th through
Sunday May 15th 2016. Unlike the past several years the room cost will be
much more reasonable - $35 a night for Sunday through Thursday and $71 for
Friday and Saturday night versus $139 last year in Houston. However, as
everywhere else, there is a “resort fee” ($10) and occupancy tax (12%)
which must be taken into consideration. Which makes the actual cost $50.40 and
$90.72 compared to $161.59 at the LaTorretta. Pricing for the event is
still being calculated, but I can assure you it will be less than last year.
Gil and I spent a couple of days there in June and found the rooms to be
very comfortable – a vast improvement over when we were last there in 2004.
Downtown in general and the Plaza in particular have undergone many
changes since we were last there, mostly positive. The hotel itself has been
completely remodeled with tile floors and new carpeting throughout. It even
smells 100% better. The area where we had our bar and hospitality room
has been altered and leased out to a vacation club company, but the upgraded
ballroom is still there so this is where we will have everything under the
one roof, as well as 10 to 12 cars inside.
Rather than parking in the far south lot, we will have a single floor of
the parking garage assigned to us, so that you can come out of the garage
and right into the third floor by the ballroom and the south tower elevators.
The Fremont Street Experience has really expanded, with three sound stages
many more kiosks and street performers, and a zip line through the middle.
Consequently it is full of people and there is little or no room to
display our cars. However, we will be able to display a few at a time in front
of the hotel. Downtown has a great deal more activity than before – most of
the hotels and casinos have bars, lounges and eating areas protruding into
what used to be the street.
That’s it for now. More details to follow. Remember we are going to need
a great deal of help pulling this off, so if you are willing to lend a
hand please let us know.
