Charlie, some but not all cracked magnesium wheels can be repaired- by experts. The first thing a competent repair shop will do is drill a 1/8" hole at both ends of the crack. This prevents the crack from unzipping like a torn plastic bag when its preheated for TIG welding. Otherwise, due to the very large heat-expansion rate of mag, you'll be chasing that crack all the way around the rim! Then they grind out the crack on both sides, and only then does the torch come into play. Once welded, a stress relief at 375 degrees F for a couple of hours should be done in Mom's kitchen oven. This will discolor any paint, incidentely so the rim will need repainting, If its an expensive, hard to replace rim, it may be worth doing. Otherwise, a new rim is your other choice from a safety/economics stamdpoint. I've had rims successfully repaired by a certified aircraft welder, and I've had one that re-cracked in a new place a few months later. And do NOT let anyone talk you into using some sort of magic glue to 'fix' a crack. That is only for those with a death wish!
Good luck- J DeRyke

Subject: [DeTomaso] Hello Houston, we have a serious problem
I noticed that I was losing air on a rear tire, so I took it off to
take a
closer look.
It would appear that my original Campy rim has a crack.
This doesn't
look good.
Is this something that can be repaired by a
competent shop dealing with
magnesium or is this rim scrap?
Any
suggestions? Thank you
