[DeTomaso] Inductive amp gauge?

How does it work?  I know that to have an inductance you need a change in
current, but most of the time the charging system is at constant current so
the inductance would be zero.  Maybe a remote sensor like.. I don't know,
an ammeter that measures the current by deflection against a coil (current
changing direction) and then registering that deflection remotely.

It always seemed kind of weird to me.
