The heavy, tall dry-sump tank- usually 20 or more quarts @7lbs.qt, is most difficult in a DeTomaso. The Pizza-Pete racing Pantera from the '70s ran a dry sump and the tank was in the extreme rear of the engine compartment, on the right side for good chassis balance, I believe. The car today is owned by a POCA member; maybe he'll weigh in. It also ran 180 exhausts. That big tank will be extremely hot and you don't want it anywhere near other sensitive components like the fuel tank, ZF or the tires!
As for an oil cooler, I suggest that a water-to-oil cooler is smaller, lighter and more efficient than any air-to-oil cooler. In a Pantera, routing air flow to an air-to oil cooler is always a big problem and you will need a larger unit than you might think because of this. Ducting lots of air into AND out of the assembly will be necessary. On the other hand, water-to-oil coolers can be placed literally anywhere you can get hoses plumbed to it. Several Pantera racer/owners successfully use Fluidyne or Laminova water-to-oil coolers including Dennis Quella, Bob Benson and Mad Dawg Antenucci. Figure at best, a good assembly will remove 12-15 degrees F from your stabilized oil temp, while the radiator water will increase only about 4-5 degrees. The dry-sump tank itself may radiate a little more heat. Synthetic oil will give more overall margin; trouble reportedly seems to start above 280F under heavy loads. Remember that one oil company found 280F in the oil pan equates to over 300F in the main & rod bearings!
Did you get that Fontana? Good luck- J DeRyke

Hello,
I am in process of preparing my car for new motor install that is running
dry sump oil pan.
I would really appreciate to receive any tips and especially photos that
could help me find right locations for mounting the external components (oil
tank, cooler, filters).
I am keeping stock fuel tank, so I guess will need to find place for the oil
tank in right front area, near the coolant tanks.
I found a very nice used tank of sufficient size for good price but not sure
if it would fit there; it is 9.25" diameter, 22" tall.
I already got a louvered panel that mounts in front of the right rear wheel,
so am planning to mount the cooler on front of that; would someone have a
suggestion for particular cooler that would offer maximum size/efficiency
and still fit in this space?
For the moment I will be using GTS headers, but would like to keep space
open in case I later convert to 180 degree system.
Thanks, Robert
