Mike...

I just bought 4 Continental tires. Sizes 245x40x17 and 295x35x18. I found 245 sizes in a Sumitmo, Continental, BFGs, Michelin, and Vredestein. All with matching rears in 18"--- 285 or 295.

It also makes little difference if the tires are 15", 16" or 17" as
long as the chosen size is 245-50 and the ODs are close.

   >>>A 245/50-17 will be much taller than a 245/50-15. But you're
totally correct about the width. A 245/50-15, 245/45-16 and 245/40-17
are almost exactly the same diameter and width and all work equally
well. As you say, a 245 is about the most you can expect to fit under
a standard body Pantera, and will definitely require rolling the fender
lips. They will rub the body on the inside at full lock--and who
cares? As long as it's not touching something important, such rubbing
   is trivial.
Too bad it's now impossible to find 245/50-15 tires anymore....and
245/45-16s are equally hard to come by. I don't know about 245/40-17s
   though?
   Mike
