[DeTomaso] Hydraulic Throw-out Bearing

Two notes: annular-piston hydraulic throwouts are self-adjusting. The travel available with a stock clutch master on the Tilton is about 1/2" at the bearing. So you first set the thing so it's at least 1/4" away from bottoming the piston. The first time you use the clutch, it may take two or more pushes before the assembly travels out to touch the pressure plate. Releasing the pedal allows the pressure plate levers and springs to push the piston back to a floating zero point, and normal wobble in the components smacks the piston a little further back. When things heat up, all the clearances will change. The bearing type is a constant-contact- it's not hurt by a lack of "free play" which only eats up disengagement distance in any clutch.

Tilton uses an internally threaded slave cylinder and requires a threaded ZF nose. Rotating the cylinder on the threads sets the operating height and a long gr-8 stripper-bolt locks the cylinder down. No shims, no looseness, no rattles. Tilton does not make one for ZFs but a nose piece for a Muncie M-22 can be lathed down. I made mine from scratch to take a std gasket & ZF seal. I've since changed clutch masters from the stock iron to a Girling 3/4" aluminum. Tilton's design cannot have over-extension problems and I was careful in the beginning to set bottoming clearance per Tilton's instructions. The system allows ALL of the stock clutch throwout apparatus to be shelved for a 6-lb weight reduction, smoother action and more travel at the clutch disc. A dash-4 input line goes thru the right side shaft hole in the bellhousing, and an extended bleeder screw line comes out the other side, with a Speed-bleeder on the end. No drill holes needed.
