[DeTomaso] Sept. SSCC

At high speeds, we always underestimate the force of the wind on parts of the car's body. When Al Bloomberg's pushbutton Pantera exceeded 200 mph at Bonneville some years ago, he'd removed the headlight motor & gearbox, and around 180 mph, the headlights came up from wind blast. So they quickly drilled a hole through the headlight bar and center brace for a 1/4" bolt & nut to lock the lights down. The next run sheared the bolt. I believe Al replaced the headlight motor to stop this. I've also seen photos taken at speed of lightweight hoods with huge buckles in the front from wind blast. Once the car slowed down, the hood regained its shape.

Ken,
What happened with the hood popping open was that I had just noticed
that I was in excess of my tech speed and I hit the brakes. My feeling
is that the small dip in the nose of the car resulted increased low
pressure point over the hood resulting in the hood bowing to such an
extent that the rod on the hood that engages the lock pulled out of the
lock. At no point did the lock become unlocked. The hood returned to
its normal position.

Mark,
Have you done anything to keep the nose from getting light at
speeds above 150?

The car felt real good at 165. was very pleased with how she ran. Too
bad the tech speed is 165, I would have liked to have gone
faster. Horse power is not an issue.
There have been times when I've driven at speed with the hood
unlatched, so I knew it was not a problem. I was hoping that I was
not
going to get a black flag due to a nervous course worker.
Unfortunately
the race was stopped shortly thereafter.

Nice, thanks for sharing.....I've had my steel decklid come up a

times...very distracting.
Glad you made it okay....how did your Pantera feel at 160?
Did you feel you had enough down force in front?
Other impressions??
