I think Lloyd has mentioned about 800 HP being a practical limit.  I assume you have to ID the weak link, and I'd guess the real limit would be torque, not HP.  Lloyd also told me the higher ring and pinion sets are stronger because the pinion gear is one of the weak links and the higher gear sets have a larger pinion gear, but I'm not sure where the other issues are.  Then you have to factor the tires in, both weight and grip.  If they just go up in smoke, all that power isn't buying much until you get to higher gears and speed.
