Take it apart and copy it is essentially reverse engineering it. When they
found out we had captured several Jap I-400's and we were supposedly
"allies" they bugged the shit out of us through diplomatic channels
demanding access to one (or more of the subs) we stalled as long as was
necessary to gather all the useful information we could and then the
Japsubs mysteriously "Sank" and for some reason we (the US) was unable
to
provide the exact location of the sunken subs.

The Russians had a mole ( or several moles) planted in the Manhattan
project and Stalin was aware of the program and our progress. That's
one of the reasons that A the soviets came up with their own bomb so
soon after the end of WWII. When the Germans realized they had lost the
war the attempted to ship their supply of U235 to Japan by Submarine.
The Submarine ( coincidentally A was # U234 ) was a new design and the
largest German sub made to date . It was on it's maiden voyage and had
trouble which delayed it's departure. They were sunk by a British
submarine with a torpedo shot that was fired while they were both
submerged. The German sub with all hands and all the U235 was lost.
besides the U235 which was supposedly not meant for use in an Atomic
bomb , but for use as a catalyst in the production of synthetic
methanol. The sub also carried three complete Messerschmitt aircraft
(presumably ME 262's because the sub also carried several spare Junkers
