[DeTomaso] Have you checked your ZF juice lately?

I let it drain for about 5 hours... I'm letting it sit overnight and will
top it up again today

There are "Nooks 'n Crannys" (Like a good English muffin)
in the ZF where oil may not quickly drain from, that could account for 1/2
liter.

How long did you let it drain?

(The shown piece is actually on top in the Pantera orientation, so has no
effect on drainage.)

No, I'm not saying that. Maybe I should be more clear. 

I drained the ZF.
I put the plug back in. 
I filled the ZF with new oil
I poured the old oil in the new oil bottles, and found that I only filled
2,5 bottles, indicating that I only had 2,5 liters of oil in there before
