>>>Oh, but there is!
Eventually that car was picked up with a forklift and spirited away. It
was 'acquired' without any paperwork by an enterprising New Zealander who was
a pilot for Royal Brunei Airways (a super-good guy named Wayne Jack, who
didn't come to last year's POCA Fun Rally only because his wife was having a
baby that weekend, where are his priorities????).
He managed to find some extremely gifted artisans who started the
restoration of this car. Despite how awful it looks in the photo, the actual
condition of the car was surprisingly good, certainly much better than many other
Panteras I've seen that LOOKED a lot better than this one.
After a couple of years, he had the still-disassembled car mounted on a jig
and completely wrapped up in protective wrapping, and the whole affair
(labelled 'auto parts') was dispatched to his home country, where noted De
Tomaso expert Paul Donderwinkle continued the restoration. Progress has started
and stopped a few times, but the car is well on the way, and only needs a
few more months of concerted effort to be fully back up to speed and concours
perfect!
When those months of work will actually take place is anybody's guess
though. :>)
Wayne now flies for Emirates and lives in Dubai. He passed through San
Francisco last fall, and we took him to Bob Benson's shop for a get-together,
where he amazed people with his thousands of photos of the restoration in
progress.
