OK here is a long shot.
I have seen this happen before and maybe it is your problem.
At least worth looking at.
When you push the clutch in- it pushes on the flywheel in toward the front
of the car. The thrust bearing in the engine carries this load.
The problem I have seen is that something touches the backing plate when you
push the clutch in. That little movement in the crank can be enough to
touch something and when you leave off the clutch it disappears.
I would not consider this the first possibility but I have seen it happen.

The other thing to consider is the STARTER, and any shield that is in
place at the bellhousing. If the shield is bent or the starter is
hanging up, it will make the noise too.
Check the starter and the bellhousing shield.
