Five or so years ago, a friend gave me a block and crank.
Then, a few years ago, I started regularly checking Craigs List. I prefer obtaining things like this from someone who has already done the hard removal process. I'm sure they are still in the Pick-a-Part lots here abouts, but that is a lot of labor for a just-in-case block.
In the span of a year or so, I gathered three 2-bolt main blocks I believe to be standard bore, two cranks, and a pair of open chamber heads.
I think my total outlay was $200 - $250.
I still occasionally check for blocks, but with four already out in the shed, not checking regularly. But it seems they are not too common these days.
