Marti only counts US cars, given that there were approx 1,500 Euro cars
(71-74), I could see that as bring legit. The serial numbers were not
consectutive for Euro versus US, sprinkled in over the run.

Marti Reports may have another number, as they count differently,
having a different definition of "Model Year".
     2293 is the first "M" code (Jan 1972) car, while 5101 (0r 5100) is
     the last "M" code car.
But there are a LOT of "M" cars started in December 1972 (or
     earlier) that were not "finished"
     until 3/73 or later.
(4847 is listed as a 1/73 date, but 4908 is listed as an 11/72 - Go
     figure!)
     5100 - 2293 = 2807.

Just a random thought. A How many Panteras were built in 1972
     approximately.
