[DeTomaso] F1 Drivers at Indy

I agree, especially about Tony. Tony had visions of grandeur regarding the F1 / IMS series. He played  a HUGE  amount of the family money on the renovation for F1, road course, new suites above the pits and new F1 garages. It was almost an “all in” financial proposition that led to his demise as president of IMS. His sisters wanted his head, and voted to remove him as president. The facility came very, very close to selling, unknown to most just how close. You could write a book about what all went on at IMS. I think it is getting a little bit better but something could drop next week.

Yeah Bernie is definitely a prick and had no respect for Indy and all the history that comes with it, but that’s pretty much just SOP for him. I was talking to one of the CoTA owners at the vintage championships last fall about their negotiations with him and it did not sound like fun! As for IMS; sending Tony George to negotiate with Bernie was absolutely sending a lamb into a lion’s den he didn’t stand a chance.

Attended them all at Indy...what put them off was Bernie trying to extort $30 million fron IMS.
That anf the total lack of respect F1 gave us, when there, the crowd was easily the largest at any F1 race, 175K-200K, yet all the midget could say was that the stands were half empty...yeah thry were...it's that big.

When F1 was at Indy-IMS, the drivers were not fond of exiting the road course in the short chute between the conventional turns 1 & 2, exiting the traditional turn 1 (counterclockwise) and traveling down the front stretch. As I remember, it was fastest F1 cars traveled on any course, at the time. The front stretch is 0.625 miles. The F! cars did not travel the entire front stretch before ducking back into the road course.

I am a huge MS fan and wish him a recovery worthy of his accomplishments.

Dave's comment has me wondering...

We all know that F1 drivers don't always translate to NASCAR success. This is due to a lot of reasons.

What I want to discuss is whether F1 skill can translate into Indy success. On road courses, sure...Villeneuve, Montoya and Mansell all mixed both well.

Has that always been the case?
