[DeTomaso] F1 Drivers at Indy

Gray, you might want to check that. The first F1 Indy race was 2000. 2005 was the Michelin issue. The first race was pretty good. Morning rain and cold temps stalled a few fans. The win was Schumacher's 42nd. The first race had nothing to recover from. Drivers were in awe of the track as is everyone who races at IMS. ( maybe with the exception of Paul Tracy) They were genuinely concerned about the conventional first turn wall and speeds on the front stretch.

I don't think it was the drivers that didn't like it. As I recall they all were in awe of being at the speedway and generally had good things to say about the track. The tires definitely didn't like it the first year; the Michelins were delaminating due to the high speeds on the very stretch of track you're talking about and it resulted in all the Michelin teams sitting out the race after losing their plea to get a chicane put on the front straight. Unfortunately this lead to a very boring race and sadly set the US grand prix at Indy off on such a bad foot that it never was able to really recover.

When F1 was at Indy-IMS, the drivers were not fond of exiting the road course in the short chute between the conventional turns 1 & 2, exiting the traditional turn 1 (counterclockwise) and traveling down the front stretch. As I remember, it was fastest F1 cars traveled on any course, at the time. The front stretch is 0.625 miles. The F! cars did not travel the entire front stretch before ducking back into the road course.

I am a huge MS fan and wish him a recovery worthy of his accomplishments.

Dave's comment has me wondering...

We all know that F1 drivers don't always translate to NASCAR success. This is due to a lot of reasons.

What I want to discuss is whether F1 skill can translate into Indy success. On road courses, sure...Villeneuve, Montoya and Mansell all mixed both well.

Has that always been the case?
