Mario Andretti won four Indy Car titles, in 1965, 1966, 1969, and 1984. In
between the last two championships, he captured the Formula One title in
1978. Emerson Fittipaldi, affectionately known as "Emmo," took the Formula
One driving title in 1972 and 1974, then claimed the Indy Car championship
in 1989. Nigel Mansell was the Formula One champion in 1992, then prevailed
on the Indy Car circuit the following year. Most recently, 1995 Indy Car
champion Jacques Villeneuve squeaked out a Formula One title in 1997.
Michael Schumacher, the Formula One world champion in 1994 and 1995, was
leading Villeneuve in the standings by one point going into the final race,
the European Grand Prix. After the two drivers bumped on lap 48, Schumacher
failed to finish and Villeneuve took third, thus scoring enough points to
take the championship 81–78.

     Dave's comment has me wondering...
We all know that F1 drivers don't always translate to NASCAR
success. This is due to a lot of reasons.
What I want to discuss is whether F1 skill can translate into Indy
success. On road courses, sure...Villeneuve, Montoya and Mansell all
     mixed both well.
Has that always been the case?
