Not that I have ever done that Dave
but an LED pen light lasts longer and one in a plastic case saves your teeths

Pen light held by my teeth works great. Easy to use and
covers the entire dash with a slight head movement.

Chris,

I have been using this
low cost LED dimmer with GREAT success in a number of LED projects. It can be
removed from the case very EZly. The board and control is very small. I have
bypassed the connectors and direct soldered my leads to the board making it
even smaller.

Something to look at!

I
switched to LEDs. The dash dimmer doesn't work, but then, the whole point
is to make the dash lights brighter!
